Old Yards under 9s had their first match of the season on Sunday away at Sutton.
This was always going to be a tough fixture for Old Yards with it being Sutton's third game of the season and Sutton having a strong squad of 28 players at under 9s compared to a squad of 10 players for Old Yards.
The team played fantastically well in their first competitive match of contact rugby. Sutton were more experienced than Old Yards at the breakdown and we found it difficult to keep the ball in the tackle and recycle the ball. We tackled heroically and Alex scored a great try in the corner however Sutton's greater possession proved too much for Old Yards and the first game was lost 6-1.
The boys enjoyed their first taste of contact rugby and the team talk ahead of the second game was dominated by how to win ball in the ruck. Once again the tackling was fantastic in particular from Ben and Hayden.
The difference in this game was that at the tackle we won ball and retained possession and with the ball in hand Alex, Dan, Jack, Adam and Oli scored great tries. Old Yards won 8-1 and man of the match was awarded to Alex for scoring 4 great tries.
