Report on the Moss Goode 15 a side tournament
Saturday saw the curtain raiser to the new rugby season in the form of the Moss Goode annual 15 a side tournament at the Old Yardleians ground in Tilehouse Lane.  Although the pitches were in superb condition heavy showers throughout the day fully tested ball handling skills.  For the 11 teams taking part it was the ideal test to see if pre-season training had been effective.
The teams were placed in groups with the resulting top sides entering the draw for the semi finals of the main competition, the shield. Some sparkling rugby played at pace and with precision saw two clear cut victories for Aston Old Edwardians by 22-0 against Kidderminster and for the Old Yards by 17-0 against Moseley Oak.
The final saw a closely fought game with Aston leading 5-0 at half time due to a well worked try but with the conversion missed.  A typically powerful run from his own half by Yards winger, Andrew Pearce, led to a try by James Hendrick, converted by Ben Honey to give the hosts a 7-5 lead.  However, with only seconds remaining a rucking offence saw Aston awarded a penalty which was kicked successfully to give Aston the win they just about deserved.
The consolation competitions saw Tamworth thrash Wednesbury 36-0 to win the Plate and Wolverhampton narrowly defeat Birmingham Exiles 5-0 to win the Bowl.
A big well done to the Old Yards committee and volunteers for their hard work in making the day a success both on and off the pitch.
