The nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling off the trees, Fabregas is after a pay rise and caravans clog up the roads and motorways. Yes, it is that time of the year when we see club rugby kicking off with 'The Moss Goode Old Yardleians annual 15 a side competition'.
The date is Saturday August 13th, the venue is Tilehouse Lane and the rugby kicks off at 12.30.
For those of you without the knowledge Maurice (Moss) Goode was a very average rugby player but a great administrator for both our club and for rugby in a wider sense. His sister donated, in his memory, a trophy to be played for each year.
The competition is now regarded by many local and increasingly more distant clubs as the starting point of the season where the coaches can assess the effectiveness of their summer and pre-season training schedules. Just in case you hadn't been told before, the first year in which the competittion took place was in 1980 when a fresh-faced but handsome young school teacher playing in his first season for the Old Ys won the trophy for his side with a well-struck penalty kick that turned out to be the only score of the match. If you can name that young rugby star then claim your free pint from Brian Wood or Peter Butler before the end of the final.
A plea to club members not actually playing in the competition from the committee. Please offer your help as we need bar staff, glass collectors, BBQ chefs, car parking personnel etc. etc.
We also welcome spectators who will be pleased to know that admission is free and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
The competition is planned to cater for 8 teams but may have to expand due to popular demand. The exact format will be annonced nearer the time.
Finally, for now, my thanks to local newspapers the Solihull News and the Solihull Observer for carrying news of our event in their sports pages.
