Old Yardleians RFC: Club News

THE SEASON GETS NEARER

Tue, 21 Aug 2012 10:35

The 15 A Side Tournament.
Now in its 32nd year, the day went very smoothly due to good weather, thorough planning by Mark Baldwin and a good deal of hard work by the squad of volunteers. Thanks also to the referees from the North Mids Society.

For most teams involved the day is an opportunity to experiment, to look at as many of their squad members as they can and to put into practice those moves and tactics that pre-season training has focussed upon.  Winning these games may well be a pleasant bonus, but not the main purpose of the competition.

Congratulations to Camp Hill for winning the main event by defeating the Old Sils in a closely fought final and also to Berkswell and Balsall who defeated Stourbridge Lions in the final of the plate competition.

How did The Old Yards perform?
With enough players for two complete teams, in dazzling new kit and with new coaches to impress, there was an air of optimism around the club.  Results on the day were

v  Exiles   won  12-0
v  Stourbridge  won  19-0
v  Aston    lost 0-10
v  Sills      lost 0-10  (semi-final)

Thoughts of our new coaching team
On the whole they were impressed by the fitness and enthusiasm displayed by our players. There were many positive aspects to our play and, obviously, some areas to develop which include positional play, handling under pressure and line out play both on our own ball and on opposition ball.
Both coaches enjoy working with the players and for observers it is good to see our players taking on board what the coaches are demanding.

Former Players and friends of the club
It was good to see so many of our former colleagues at the club on saturday.  We hope that you were impressed enough to come back again throughout the season.  A few names that came along include Kiwi, Tex and Maggie with family, Dick and Gwen, Ken, Blox, Jan Ullah and even Tinker and Steve Jacks from one of our local clubs down by the crem.

Coming soon
Under 17 training on sunday 2nd September.
First XV  v  Handsworth   on 1st September
v   Birningham Civil Service (first league match) on 8th September.

And Finally
Shame really,  £24 million and they lose to Everton.  Oh dear me  !
As for the music man in mid field ,  if our Spanish friends want him they can have him.
