Old Yardleians RFC: Club News
LOCAL DERBIES ARE NEVER EASY
Wed, 24 Apr 2013 03:36
FIRST XV
A short trip down to the Landrover club to meet Civil
Service, a team that we have rarely played over the years, was never
going to be easy. The race for the second promotion place is very close
and we expected a tough game and that was what we got.
Playing the
first half with wind and slope in our favour, the kicking from hand by
Jake White put us into good positions but scoring was not to be easy.
Eventually, a clever chip and chase by White, resulted in a try.
However, some flimsy tackling from our backs kept the game alive and a
half-time score of 14-5 did not really look too comfortable. One
observation from an ex number ten, if you are awarded a penalty in an
easy position take the three points on offer. I won't say any more.
The
second half was familiar. The use of fresh legs from the bench was to
our benefit as the warmest day of the year so far seemed to drain the
Service team more than ours. The Y's fitness again told and we ended up
winning by 36-19. Tries for Ys coming from Tom G. with three and one
each for Jake and Andy Pearce. Jake did the rest.
An interesting
observation was Dave Rimmer trying to replace Robbie and Peter in the
buffet club. Seen coming out of the club with a plate resembling a mountain of sarnies, pork
pie etc. Dave declared his intention of standing as food clearance
officer at the AGM. Well, it was free I suppose. It was good to see a
number of our friends at the game especially Micky Bloxham who is
recovering well by the looks of things.
DEVELOPMENT XV
An even
shorter journey for our boys for a game in the shadows of the new
Shirley shopping development, Parkgate, against long time rivals Camp
Hill. Trailling for most of the game our boys timed things nicely to
come away with a 16-15 win. It is a fact of the game that if one team
wins then the other loses. As they say in The Colebrook, 'C'est La Vie'
VANDALS
Yet
another away day as our experienced boys made the trip across town to
the Perry Common home of Aston Old Eds. Never an easy place to win so
we can be satisfied with victory by 33-24. Well done on maintaining the
season long unbeaten run.
