OLD YARDS HORNETS

Who or what are the 'Hornets'?
As the club has enjoyed success, it has also attracted new players of all levels of ability and experience. Also, players who had previously played on an occasional basis have shown a greater commitment to being available for selection. In addition, last season's impressive Youth Squad were considered to be ready for integration into the senior sides. The club made the decision that we had too many players for three teams on a saturday and the suggestion was to open up a fourth team which would be known as The Hornets. Thanks to Paul "Goose" Gower Birmingham based engineering firm Nu-gears sponsored the cost of a new set of playing shirts kit and fixtures arranged. It was thought a good idea to keep the younger group together and the rest of the side was made up of senior players who had been part of last season's undefeated Vandals team.
Saturday arrived and our opposition was a very competent Worcester Wanderers team and the touchline feeling was that our younger players might be overawed by the occasion. Led by skipper, Dave Hanson, whose son Callum was also in the team, it soon became obvious that confidence was high. Driving play from the forwards and good handling from the backs soon resulted in the opening try of the afternoon as Hanson senior made a break from half way and his outside pass to Tre'rail Peters saw the St. Thomas Aquinas student use his pace to beat the cover to touch down.
As the game continued, the enthusiasm shown by the youngsters spread to the older players and tries from Peter Butler, Gary Robinson and the 'flying' Ian Walker put the result beyond doubt. Worcester scored a well-deserved consolation try making the final score 24-5 to the home side but it was a day to remember for the 'Hornets'. A special mention for Paul Thornton, Dave Rimmer and Paul Gower who all came out of retirement hopefully for the season if not longer.
Vandals XV
Welcomed Woodrush Seconds for what was a scrappy encounter with the visitors winning 18-12. It was good to see young Duce at scrum-half for the opposition after many years of him informing me that he was better at football.
