Old Yardleians RFC: Club News
A VERY NICE DAY AT TILEHOUSE LANE
Mon, 07 Oct 2013 12:00
What a pleasant day we had on Saturday. The sun shone throughout the day, The Mayor joined us for the afternoon, the Vice Presidents assembled in numbers never seen before, the First XV actually played their first home game of the season and The Hornets dazzled the large crowd yet again.
I will try not to bore you with too much detail but a brief outline of events might be informative.
First XV
After what seemed like a lifetime of travelling, our boys got to play a home league game against Pershore, a team who never make life easy and this week's game was no different. The Yards started cautiously with the pack achieving parity and the backs not looking as sharp as they can. However, as the game progressed our forwards gradually gained control and the possession enabled the backs to cut loose. A special mention for our number 10, having once been in that wonderful position myself. The outside half tends to be blamed for global warming, third world poverty and any kick at goal from any position that doesn't quite make it. Well, Jake, an excellent kick and chase that saw a try under the posts was for me the highlight of the game. A final score of 27-11 in our favour and a winning bonus point was just what we needed. Well done Boys.
Development XV
Luke's report was too lengthy to include so with editorial skill, our boys travelled down to Wyre Piddle to play against Pershore 2nds and we returned with a victory by 25-0
Vandals XV
Our senior citizens squad also headed south, but to Alcester where they met a reinforced opposition who had their other games called off. Although our forwards exerted much control, we struggled a little in the backs and the final score was a win by the hosts 19-38
Hornets XV
A couple of weeks ago our Hornets travelled to play Old Griffs and were beaten by a couple of tries. The luck of the draw in the fixture pool saw the Griffs coming to us. Ex Griff player and coach Rick Thorne was the guest of honour and he was able to watch a display of running rugby from a team with the average age of about 17 years (our president took the week off!). The final score was somewhere close to 54-15 to our youngsters and sorry Jordan, no try no pint!
Vice Presidents Day
The Old Yards equivalent of 'Last of the summer wine' in other words, our V.P. early season gathering was a very successful occasion. Jan Collins and her helpers provided a superb buffet and the numbers attending were greater than ever. Far too many to mention by name but it was great to see you all and I hope that you enjoyed the food, drink, story telling and two good games of rugby. We were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Solihull who congratulated the club on it's progress both on and off the pitch. Thanks also to our President, Steve Painter (Dip FD) for a very good speech. It was good to see the First Lady join us and I am sure she was not checking up on you.

And Finally
She who thinks that she is Meryl Streep took me on a surprise break to Lyme Regis. Sadly, the sky sports television revolution doesn't seem to have got that far meaning I missed the Arsenal v Naples game. If any of you know the result, please inform me.
