The First XV returned to Midlands 3 West (South) action last Saturday and recorded their biggest league win of the season when they overwhelmed basement side Evesham 69-0.
Despite a determined effort by Evesham they were no match for a slick Old Yards outfit led by Phil Painter who were dominant in all phases of the game scoring eleven tries in all. After the opening try was scored by No.8 Nick "the Salmon" Allen, the floodgates opened and Yards remaining ten tries were scored by flankers Dave Hawkins & Will Ralph, winger Carl Bucknall, scrum half Tom Waters, Fly half Jake White, centre Joe Merriman, replacement scrum half Tom Grocott and an outstanding hat trick by fullback Sean Rai. Fly half White also added seven conversions. And showing that you're never too old, a special mention must go to the game's referee Welshman Mike Jones who kept up with this fast paced game matching points in years at the ripe old age of 69.
With top placed Pinley unexpectedly losing at home to Southam this latest win moves Yards to within three points of the leaders but with two games in hand. This coming Saturday sees a local derby with Yards taking on near neighbours Kings Norton over at Hopwood, kick off 3pm.
Elsewhere the second XV slipped to defeat over at Evesham 2nds in their Worcester & Hereford Merit League 1 clash, with Yards playing a man short throughout the hosts eventually ran out 24-5 winners, with Yards solitary score coming from winger Paddy Waldron-Healy.
The Vandals travelled over to Essington to play Willenhall Veterans and a solid team performance saw them win 22-0, tries were scored by side stepping prop Shannon Killarney (2), youngster Alan Arkell and emergency prop Roger Lazenby, with fullback Dave Rollins converting one.
The Hornets continued their winning ways by beating Yardley & District 2nds 19-0 over at Cole Hall Lane, tries were scored by skipper Dave Hanson, Luke Doyle & Pete Farrell with fly half Cameron Powell adding two conversions.
