A NERVOUS PERFORMANCE BUT A WIN IS A WIN

Mon, 20 Oct 2014 12:00

First XV
At home against the bottom team in the league, Old Coventrians, Saturday's game was seen by many as a 'must win' game.  We made a lot of unforced errors in terms of passes put down, tackles that were not completed, and some wrong options taken.  The opposition looked as if they had never met each other beforehand and although they showed a lot of individual endeavour, there was little cohesive teamwork evident. Gradually, our forwards took almost total control of scrum and line out starving the visiting backs. The familiar driving maul caused chaos and led to three tries which along with sound goalkicking from Jake was sufficient to give us a win, in the sort of contest that will empty the grounds and increase the number of shoppers in Solihull.

Development / Second XV
Travelling over to Bournville, our boys returned with an impressive win by 23-5. It might have been a bigger win if pressure had been put into points. Rumours suggest that Bournville number 10 Michael Charnley was inspirational. It must be the influence of St. Thomas Aquinas !

Don't forget John Mac
This Saturday at the club come and have a chat with the big man, John McConnell.

Senior Fixtures this Saturday.
First XV   away v  Old Laurentians  League match (CV22 7QT)

Spot the mistake
Congratulations to Andy Dunn for spotting the three deliberate spelling mistakes in a previous report. First prize is a game of scrabble against any prop forward of his choice.

MINIS (OUR FUTURE STARS)

How do we know who has won? It is fairly easy for seniors but on a Sunday morning there ar e a number of factors to consider. Sometimes we play 3 or 4 sessions rather than 2. Are the winners the team with most overall tries or the team that wins most sessions?  To be honest does it really matter as long as the youngsters have enjoyed the experience, improved in skills gained etc. Some clubs don't publish their results (unless they win) but that is rather sad. Either tell the whole story or none of it.

Minis Results
Last Sunday

Under 10s had an early trip to take part in Leicester Tigers tournament held at Tamworth with the winners invited to appear at Welford Road.  In the toughest test in their careers to date, the 18 teams included sides from a wide area including Rotherham. We did not win but battled superbly and it will be a major step in our development.

The under 8s and 12s travelled to the outskirts of Coventry to face new opponents, Earlsdon.
Our 8s controlled their game and achieved victory whichever system you use.
The under 12s had an exciting game/s and at the final whistle a draw was the outcome.

The under 7s played their first official match and the visit to Woodrush resulted in a narrow defeat, but the future does look bright.
Also making the short trip to Woodrush our under 9s cruised to a convincing win.
The under 11s also won but I will provide more details as soon as I can.

Mini Fixtures this Sunday.
We are due to play hosts to Old Saltleians, but due to their lack of numbers some teams might have to merge for the day.  Again, more information as soon as I can.
