Old Yardleians RFC: Club News

A Saturday afternoon drive...

The Club's elderly gentlemen made the journey over to Stourton on Saturday to play Stourbridge Lions "Grasshoppers" in a game officiated by our second "under age" referee on only his sixth assignment. The opening exchanges were a free for all to say the least with the referee unfamiliar with several key aspects of the game notably knock ons, and displaying a willingness to listen to both sides offering their "advice" on all other aspects of the law. Despite a bright start by the home side the old guard soon got into their stride and were well in front by half time. In a game where tackling by both sides had seemingly become an optional extra, the game was effectively dominated by the 150 stone Vandal pack who shunted the home side around at will. Even when down to seven men after the tallest player on the park Phil Gouldbourn was harshly carded for a high tackle one of the shortest players the Vandals pack continued to dominate the tight. A total of seven tries were scored by Egg Male, Rick Lowe, Max Gimson, Nick Palmer, Roger Lazenby and a classy brace from Barry Gunningham with evergreen Ralph Rollins adding five conversions in the 45-10 victory.
