So far this season the playing conditions have been kind to us allowing our boys the chance to express themselves. However, that changed on Saturday and we had to show if we had the skills needed to play on a slippery pitch and with a greasy ball. Our opponents, Stourbridge Lions, a mid table team like ourselves, made the better start kicking well when needed and using their impressive three quarters whenever they could. They built a half-time lead of 13-0. There appeared to be an undercurrent of niggle and frustration which resulted in some visits to the 'bin', but sometimes that can clear the air and lead to a better game.
As half time arrived so did the Erdington Express, with a grumpy, one time second row, complaining about scheduled kick off times. Mick, from our next game, kick offs are all 2.15 until further notice. On behalf of the club, sorry mate, and you can claim your free pint from Chiltern Railways whenever it suits you.
Anyway, the second half was much better with the Ys controlling scrum and line out, looking much sharper in all aspects of the game and going on to score three unanswered converted tries to win by 21-13.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could perform at our very best in our November fixtures.
Our tiny stars of the future.
The Under 7s visited Woodrush to play their first real match of the season, and for most of the team, their first match ever. The final result was a draw and, amazingly, every player in the team scored at least one try. Well done coaches and players. This Sunday, fill up with petrol, pack a picnic and enjoy the Worcestershire countryside, and, hopefully, show the Upton folk just how good the Old Yards are.
News Just Received
It appears that our First team are rather limited according to the report on our game against Stourbridge. Not only that, it also seems that we were only playing against half of their regular team. Call me old fashioned but I was of the opinion that if you scored more points than the team in opposition then that made you the better team. It is only a game, win, draw or lose and best wishes to Stourbridge for the rest of the season.
