First XVAs good a place to start as any. Having felt the embarrassment of defeat with little effort made to do anything about it, was a fairly regular happening earlier in the season. Well, Saturday made us all feel a bit of pride in our club. Earlier in the season we were well beaten at Newcastle and with both sides not very far from the wrong end of the table, the result of this meeting was crucial in the battle to avoid the drop.
There were some interesting happenings and the referee was very keen to lay down the law about body piercing. but was not so keen on some other areas of the game.
The final score of 40-17 in our favour was nice to see and I will single out two players. Firstly, skipper Mick Brennan who is one of a rare breed at the Yards, a second row player with good handling skills and a Gazelle like pace around the field which led to the scoring of tries. One of our younger players, Andy Pearce, was criticised by many of our followers and by some of his team mates. However, recent performances have shown him to be a powerful finisher from the wing and his determined running impressed the large home crowd.
Second XV
I am still waiting for a report but the rumours coming out of Ledbury suggest an awesome display of rugby. Credit to Chris and Jim for turning things round and a win by 43 - 7 justifies the celebrations.
Vandals
We were ready and waiting but our opposition were not.
Off the field
The funeral of former Chairman, Tony Meades, on Thursday, saw many of his contemporaries gather to celebrate his life. It was good to see so many old faces at the gathering.
Friday night saw a Charity Quiz at the club. Tex and Maggie were strongly tipped to win but the Power Team clinched it in the end.
Saturday, before the First Team game, saw an amazing feast put on by Pat, Debs and their helpers, as a Thank you for the many volunteers who support the club in many ways.
