Cyril's FuneralIf you had been at Olton Friary on Friday and seen the size of the congregation you would very quickly understand the level of friendship and respect in which Cyril was held. Those of you not familiar with the Church of Rome and who expected a thirty minute service will have been enlightened. Also, Father Dominic was in good form and enjoyed the large turn out. I believe he was given the title 'Duracell' which I am not sure I understood. I will ask around on that one.
Not surprisingly, it was back to the club for refreshments and social interaction. There is something about funerals that seems to attract one time club members from far and wide and it was good to bump into Earnol (Bo) Campbell, Dave Broadfield, Denzil, Terry from Ashby and many others including a good number of our friends from Shirley Park.
Charity Quiz Night
Friday 8th of September is the date of our next Old Yards Quiz. An entry fee of £8 also covers the cost of a very nice Fish and Chip supper. You can come along as part of a team (max 6) or come alone and join a team. The club opens at 7.00, the quiz should start at 7.30 and the food interval around 9.00. Its good fun and front row players can come along (assuming they can read this message) and see if they can offer an answer or two.
Our First Team
Having been a Rugby Club for almost 90 years, it is about time they gave us an early performance to offer hope for the coming season. Saturday afternoon was delightful in terms of weather, beer at £2 a pint and a large crowd. The playing surface was excellent ,(thanks Bill and his lawnmower team) and we welcomed Woodrush, our opponents in this North Midlands Shield, plate or vase or jug or whatever game. . Not wishing to tempt fate, we played some very good rugby. Strong in the scrum, impressive at the breakdown and with some slick handling we were not behind at any stage of the match.
The Final score was a win to Old Yards by about 27 - 10.
Next Saturday we open our league programme with a visit to Droitwich.Kick Off 3.00.
