Old Yardleians RFC: Club News
End of Season Arrangements

Note: These dates supersede the dates published in the fixture card.
Saturday 21st April - Final League Game
This Saturday the 21st April our 1st XV play their final league game of the season. They are at home against table topping Droitwich who have only lost one league game all year (where we suspect they fielded a weakened team due to their progression to the National Intermediate Cup final at Twickenham the week before). Droitwich need a bonus point victory against us to guarantee them a first place finish in Midlands 2 West (South) ahead of second placed Malvern. The kick-off is at 3 pm and obviously the omens are not good - this will probably be another very hard day at the office for Old Yards. Please come along and support this gritty and loyal bunch of players who have stuck with the task of fulfilling our league fixtures this season to ensure that we only go down one league. For those that didn’t know, we have been under threat of being demoted from level 7 to level 10 since we had to postpone our away fixture over at Malvern back in February.
28th April - Presidents Day and ‘end-of 90th anniversary season celebration’
Steve Painter is standing down as club President at the end of the season, so please come out and support his final President’s Day. The bar will be open from 12 noon. The U15s will be playing against Camp Hill at 1 pm and we are aiming to have two senior games, for a 1st XV and a Vets XV, kicking off at 3 pm. In celebration of our 90th anniversary season a buffet lunch will be provided for all non-playing attendees, members, ex-members, VPs and sponsors. All are welcome and this is your invite. Come and join us for an end-of-season social to celebrate our 90th year, catch up with old friends and finish the playing season on a high.
Friday 4th May – Annual General Meeting
The clubhouse will be open from 6:30 pm. The AGM will start at 7:30 pm sharp. All committee roles are up for grabs for the 2018-19 season, so if you want to have your say about the future direction of Old Yardleians RFC and are ready to put something back into the club, now is your chance. The rugby club is merely a shadow of its former self without the ambition to compete and succeed at a senior level. If our only ambition going forward is to play social rugby, we will rapidly fade into oblivion.
Friday 11th May – Men’s Dinner
After being let down by two of our original choices of speaker, namely Richard Hibbard (who suffered a bad back injury to be fair) and Andy Powell (he got his dates mixed up – probably off rallying his golf cart) we have managed to secure Wales and British Lions full-back Lee Byrne as guest speaker. By popular demand we’re back on the Indian food theme this year.
Can we ask all Old Yardleians men, past and present, to rally round and buy a ticket for this year’s dinner. Tickets are £35 each. We’ve been struggling to get more than one team out all year and so there is a danger that we won’t have sufficient numbers at the dinner to cover the cost of the speaker and the food. The men’s dinner has been held every year as far back as anyone can remember and now is not the time to let one of the main traditions of this great club slip up.
If you have not yet bought a ticket then please contact Shannon on 07866 260262 or Pat on 07531 660400 and we will help you reserve your seat.
